As Cyprus takes over the EU presidency this week, an idle thought occurs:

Has anyone seen the 1959 British Ealing comedy Carlton-Browne of the F.O.?

It’s about a former British colony island nation that has become divided into two halves in conflict. The West is politically mobilised when out of the blue the Russians show a sudden and unexpected interest in prospecting in the country.
